The Music of Kevin Johnson

The Musical PAST B.C.

Kevin Johnson first performed music he had written in public in 1966 at a school talent contest. He and three of his fellow cub scouts had done a skit much earlier where they wore Beatles' wigs and lipsynched the words to "I Wanna Hold Your Hand." Three of them decided they liked it so well they just had to learn to play music and form a band. They did and stayed together for the next seven years!

The first band was called the Midnight Raiders, Then in junior high it was The Cubic Reality and finally in high school they were named Flight. It was then they were befriended by Rick Neilson, who at that time was the leader of the CBS-Epic Recording group FUSE who had one album out. He proposed that they would share equipment and a practice room and said he would "teach them the ropes" by allowing them to watch otherwise closed practice sessions. Rick and Tom Petersson of FUSE went on in later years to form the supergroup called Cheap Trick.

They purchased a lot of their equipment from Fuse as you can see by the name still on the amplifier head on the floor.

It wasn't long until Flight was one of the most booked bands in the area. Though the largest audience they ever played for was only 6,000 people they played everywhere that booked bands. This included colleges way before they were old enough to go to one. They backed up B.B. King, were the warm up act for the final performance of FUSE, and were asked to perform for figure skater Janet Lynn's homecoming from the Olympics. In fact their last performance was playing for a private party for her and her athlete friends from around the world in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin.

After a friend committed suicide, Kevin went through a three month depression asking the questions "Who can I trust to tell me if life is better than death? Will what snapped inside of my friend snap inside of me?" He prayed a prayer that asked God to reveal Himself if He was really there and He did. (see brief bio) Finally, after a lot of unusual events, Kevin seriously re-thought his values and what life was truly all about and accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Saviour while sitting in a car with only God as his company.

His new faith eventually led him to bow out of Flight.

The Musical PAST A.D.

It also happened that his leaving the group coincided with graduating from high school. Kevin had initially signed up for the pre-law course of study at a local college but soon found he was not suppose to do that. God led him to take a year out to study the Bible on his own and provided employment that would allow him to read it on breaks. He worked for Sears Warehouse and the lawn crew of a large suburban mall.

During this time he met Joe Whitchurch who would be a lifelong friend. Kevin was driving down the road and saw a young man with long hair wearing an army jacket who was hitchhiking. He thought he would attempt to talk to this fellow about Jesus. When the young man (Joe) got into the car he said, "I used to be into social protest but that didn't satisfy me and Kevin answered "Me too and I know what you mean! I used to be in a Rock-'n-Roll group and that didn't satisfy me either." After asking each other what bands they had been in and verifying that they each had heard of the other's band, Kevin said, "But then I read a book called the Late Great Planet Earth and it really changed my life." Joe began to laugh and Kevin wondered if Joe was mocking him. He asked Joe rather pointedly, "Did you ever read it?" Joe answered, "About five times!" Kevin asked, "So are you a Christian?" "Yes!" Joe said enthusiastically. He then showed Kevin the words on the back of his army jacket which had been taken from Isaiah, "Who has believed our report? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?" Kevin asked him where he was going and offered to take him there. Joe said he was going downtown to put an ad in the paper to sell his keyboard because he couldn't find any Christian musicians to perform with. Kevin said, "No you're not! We've been praying for a Christian organ player for three months!" That day was the first time they played together but it wouldn't be the last. As you scroll down you will see Joe in The Good Knight Band with Kevin.

Joe and Kevin both worked at the Leighton Ford Crusade that summer as counselors (Kevin got to share his testimony for the first time on stage in public in front of six thousand people there) and Joe met his future wife Kim while leading her to the Lord!

Kevin and Joe then heard about all the controversy surrounding the new occult film The Exorcist and decided to do something about it. They took their girlfriends down to witness to the people standing in line at the theater by passing out tracts to them. They even threw one in the car of the reporters that were driving by. The reporters turned around and asked them if they would be willing to come to the "news-tower" and be interviewed. They agreed and ended up in the paper!

This is the article:

Joe and Kevin were to go to Bible college together as roomates, Kevin would be Joe's best man in his wedding and Joe performed the ceremony marrying Kevin and Julie. Today, Joe has a Masters degree in apologetics from Trinity Divnity School and is the regional director for Intervarsity Christian Fellowship in the northern half of Indiana and is a board member of ICA.

Kevin then went to Northwestern Bible College in Minnesota and Blackhawk College a secular college in the Quad Cities. In the midst of it all he formed another friendship and a creative writing relationship with Joseph Ravitts. Joseph had a degree in history and had appeared in nearly twenty plays at that time. The two found they had a lot of shared interests which included theology and the Arthurian traditions of England. Both wanted to serve Christ with their talents and believed God was leading them to form a ministry/singing duo. They became The Knights of The Lord's Table:

Kevin Johnson and Joseph Ravitts composed and recorded the music on this 1977 album:

This album cover was created by artist Stephen Smith, who also created Don Francisco's first album cover. He based it upon drawings and concepts that Kevin and Joseph gave him. The painting/portrait shows Kevin (on the left) and Joseph (on the right) dressed in knights attire that reflects that they have come from the heavenly city/castle on the hill. However, they are standing on the opposite side which is meant to show they are in the world but are not of the world. This echoes Jesus' words found in John 17:14,15 "I have given them Your word; and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. I do not pray that You should take them out of the world, but that You should keep them from the evil one."

The heavenly city stands in stark contrast with the modern city that is on the opposite side of the chasm. The pollution running down the side of the chasm from the city (not easily seen in this smaller copy of the original) represents the sinful moral decay of Western Civilization that is constantly eroding its foundation and which threatens to send the city plunging into the chasm of destruction. This was influenced by the late Dr. Francis Shaeffer's book "Death in the City." The angel in the sky is pointing his drawn sword at the city signifying the verse found in John 3:18 "He that believeth on him is not judged: he that believeth not hath been judged already, because he hath not believed on the name of the only begotten Son of God." Part of that judgment is letting man have his own evil way, thus the pollution problem. The "city on the hill" represents Heaven or the dwelling places of the righteous in Christ. "Ye are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hid" Mt 5:14). The dove flying over the world stands for the Holy Spirit who has been sent abroad throughout the earth to convince men of truth and judgment.

The swords of the two knightly ambassadors of the King on the hill have been sheathed and they are holding olive branches in their hands signifying they are coming with a peace offer (i.e. The Gospel of Jesus Christ). Their crests are composed of all the colors found in the Tabernacle of Moses and hold their same symbolic significance. The sword on their crests is made out of gold (signifying divine origin) and has a blood red cross symbolizing the New Testament and a gold Star of David representing the Old Testament. The sword, therefore, is the Bible. "For the word of God is living, and active, and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing even to the dividing of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and quick to discern the thoughts and intents of the heart." Heb 4:12 The chalice represents the cup of communion and, of course, the dove again represents the Holy Spirit of God.

Kevin and Joseph grew up in what is now called "The Classic Rock Era" which featured such secular musical groups as The Beatles, The Who, The Moody Blues, Jethro Tull and duos like Simon and Garfunkel. The style of their music on The Knight of The Lord's Table album somewhat reflects these influences and especially the band they later put together did.

This advertisement/promo ran in Cornerstone Magazine:

It reads like this:

Knighthood in a Democracy?

OF COURSE! The Devil's idea of equality is to have all men equally degraded; God's idea is to have all of His children equally noble. In Old English, the word "knight" meant one was both an aristocrat, and a servant to someone greater than himself. Kevin S. Johnson and Joseph Ravitts, "The Knights," show this concept of servanthood in their music.

"Two of the most creative songwriters I know."
--Randy Matthews , producer of "Knights"

"The Knights of the Lord's Table . . . present the gospel in an interesting and intellectually stimulating way. . . I highly recommend them and their album."
--Mike Johnson, artist on Newpax Records

"HEAR YE! : Every once in a while a singing group comes along that has a special touch. . . 'The Knights of the Lord's Table' are like that. They have blessed us in Melbourne (Fla) not only by their servants attitude, but by their keen wit, their ability to understand needs and minister to them, and their fine musical talent."
--Jamie Buckingham, author-pastor-evangelist

"It is rare that I come across such an album as "Knights of the Lord's Table" . . . I receive 10 or 15 albums per week from different people. . . Upon hearing ['Knights'} the first time, I decided that I will use it on the nationally syndicated program."
--Jerry Bryant, radio announcer, "Jesus Solid Rock"

"You guys were super! It was a totally different style that got [the gospel] through so clearly. You'll definitely be back here!"
--Dean Nelson, manager, "The Salt Company," Detroit

Joseph Ravitts' Pastor Had This To Say About The Knights:

"Together Kevin and Joseph form another personality which is both loving and challenging, musical and literary, expressive and poetic. But best of all, they are both totally sold out to Jesus, and, therefore, I would recommend their ministry to any church organization."
Marvin Savola, pastor of Faith Alliance Church Rockford IL

Kevin Showing Randy Matthews A New Song

Their music was published by Paragon Music in Nashville and appeared on the Holy Kiss record label. This album also featured the work of some very well known, professional and gifted musicians. The producers were the father and son team of Monty Matthews and his son Randy. Monty was the founder of the "Foggy River Boys" and the even more famous "Jordanaires" of Elvis Presley fame. Randy Matthews was the first contemporary Christian artist on Myrrh Records and is considered a pioneer in the field. Bobby Daniels (our percussionist/drummer) had performed on the "Gambler" album of Kenny Rogers. Our bass and lead guitarist was Michael Johnson who had played in the Mike Bloomfield and Paul Butterfield blues bands before becoming a Christian artist in his own right after his conversion. Randy Goodrum was the instrumental arranger and keyboardist. He had already won a Grammy for the song "You Needed Me" performed by Ann Murray and has had several top ten hits including "Bluer Than Blue" and "Sad To Belong" on the secular charts. Everyone involved on the album professed Christ and gave of themselves above and beyond the call of duty.

Kevin and Joseph toured with the album in mostly the eastern half of the United States from Detroit to Miami and, of course, the Midwest where they originated from. They were active in "Jesus Music" just before it was popularized as "Contemporary Christian Music." They toured with this album from 1977-1980. In the process they were asked by creative management at Christian Concert Tours in Nashville to form s full band instead of just the duo.

They formed The Good Knight Band

They hoped to instill a sense of godly adventure and manly assertiveness in the hearts of the Christian men listening in order to counter (almost presciently) some of the gender confusion of our day and the feminization of men. They emphasized the need for men to be men in the biblical sense of the word. Their message was similar to that of the ancient Israelite General Joab found in 2 Samuel 10:12 "Be of good courage, and let us play the man for our people, and for the cities of our God: and Jehovah do that which seemeth him good. So Joab and the people that were with him drew nigh unto the battle against the Syrians: and they fled before him."

The biblical concept of manhood precludes the use of force in a selfish way. "Trousered apes" need not apply for knighthood at the Lord's Table. The lyrics of one of the songs on this album, Bold Musketeer, written by Joseph Ravitts, shows forth this concept. After the hero of the song rescues the woman he loves from the clutches of an evil duke, having had to climb a castle wall and fight his way through the guards to do so, the song admonishes the Bold Musketeer:

You're not surprised that your lady is grateful,

As you lead her to a carriage.

But will your own love for her still be faithful,

After the tenth year of marriage?

Now comes the hard part for any rogue,

Loving his wife through her old age.

Responsibility's not in vogue.

With Musketeers in this cold age.

But bear in mind Sir, that Christ watches you,

And all adultery grieves Him!

He says that men to their wives must be true,

And blesses each who believes Him!

Bold musketeer take the sword of the Spirit,

Fight now to rule over fleshly desire!

If you'll obey God's command when you hear it,

Seek out the standard of Christ and draw near it,

If you will hold to His truth and revere it,

Then I will call you a man to admire!

The Musical Past After The Knights

Joseph Ravitts married his long standing friend Mary and Randy Grace and Kevin were asked to move to Nashville in order to better write and submit songs to Christian Concert Tours. In 1980 they moved to Nashville where they had quite a few adventures and wrote many songs. One adventure led them to wite a song for an advertising firm that was submitting a campaign to Dr. Pepper. The song was called "Feel That Feeling." The firm told them that it made it favorably all the way to the vice president's ear but could go no further because it came from an outside instead of "in-house" agency and they didn't want to risk law suit if in the future they used something similar.

Randy Grace, Ted Nugent and Kevin at the Nashville Airport.

One such adventure happend at Nashville Airport while waiting for their friend, Jeff Calahan's flight to arrive. They struck up a conversation about music with Rock legend Ted Nugent. Ted is now a champion of various conservative causes such as second amendment rights which makes him an enigma to many of those who are very liberal in the Rock world. After some conversation, Ted, noticing Jeff had his professional camera set up with him, asked "Why don't you fire up that camera and we'll take a couple of pictures together?" The above is the result.

One of those songs written in Nashville in 1980-81 by Randy and Kevin was entitled, I Was A Lonely Boy. Two years later, because of his father's leukemia, Kevin moved back to the Quad Cities to be with him. It was then and there that the song was recorded by a Christian group that Kevin worked with for half a year. That group had been selected in a contest by CCM Magazine as the most promising new Christian band of that year. By early 1982 they were looking to do crossover songs and Kevin met them in the Quad Cities and they recorded 11 of Kevin's songs. The recording was submitted to a major west coast agency and they were told that they sounded too "British for a midwestern band" and they were asked to redo the songs. The guys had other commitmments (like running a dad's chiroprator clinic down in Georgia) and it was impossible for everyone to stay together. The lead guitar player, Tim Huffman, used the tapes as demos to audition for Mylon Lefevere's Broken Heart Band and was accepted. He and Mylon went on to win a Grammy for their song "More" (of Jesus).

The Past Leading Up To Mount Carmel Outreach

In 1982 Kevin's dad, Carl Sigurd Mauritz Johnson, went home to Heaven after Kevin had just won the above award with Randy. The last song Kevin wrote and played for his dad before he died had a title that was based on a line from a C.S. Lewis book. It was ironically called:

You Should Never Say Encore!
('Cause There's So Much More To See)

Speaking of his parents, Kevin comes by writing lyrics quite naturally. His 81 year old mother, Theda Day, has been twice voted the number one poet by her peers in a writer's guild located in her home city for her 79th and 80th years. She has also been published nationally and recorded in the national archives.

After his dad's death at the very end of 1982 (December 29) Kevin was in abstentia voted to be the President/Director of Mount Carmel Outreach. He also then met, led to the Lord, and (about a year later) married his wife Julie. Music took a back seat until the middle of the nineties where upon urging from Joel Griffith and others he began to record songs again and agreed to perform at various Christian functions as a sideline.

After Kevin presented at The Cornerstone Festival in 2001, he was approached by a young man from California asking if he knew of any apologetics-oriented Contemporary Christian music. It was interesting that he would ask that because this has been an ongoing project of Mount Carmel's and Kevin's during the nineties. We have recorded about six songs (one pro-life song written from the unborn child's perspective was written by Joel Griffith) and need to record at least four more to put together a new album. Several of these already recorded songs need some polishing as well. Since music ministry isn't our main thrust, it has had to take a back seat to other concerns but we have not given up on using our talents in this field.

1997 Kevin Singing At A Mount Carmel Outreach
Branch Conference In Indianapolis

When he was asked to both speak and sing at The Prophecy 2000 conference in Springfield, Missouri, Kevin was delighted to find that a musical group at a very large church had been for some time performing the song by Joseph Ravitts entitled "The Ballad of Sir Wilfred And Rebecca" which tells the story of Ivanhoe. As stated above, Kevin had re-recorded the song in the nineties for the purpose of releasing an apologetics-oriented album in conjunction with Mount Carmel Outreach. Dr. David Allen Lewis remembered Kevin singing the song at the ancient Roman amphitheater at Caesarea Mauritania in Israel and had asked him for a copy of the new recording. David played it for the folks in the worship team who liked it so much that they reproduced it with a complete instrumental ensemble rendition. Kevin has shared these lyrics with several Israelis including one Consul General's wife who teared up at it, and at least one British/Jewish tour group that was present at the Caesarea performance.

Here are the lyrics:

The Ballad Of Sir Wilfred And Rebecca
by Joseph Ravitts

In the courtyard of a castle stood a Jewish maid Rebecca,

Accused of working sorceries from Hell,

All the witnesses were liars and the judges all were bigots,

They hated her for being a child of Israel!

They boasted they were Christians,

But if they read their Bibles,

In Genesis twelfth chapter and third verse,

They would have seen the promise,

That God has given Abram,

That all who curse his people God will curse!

Chorus:

Bless the seed of Abraham God has not forsaken them,

He loves them and He wants us to agree!

Bless the seed of Abraham God has not forsaken them,

They still belong as branches on His tree!

But they did not read their Bibles,

They preferred their own commandments,

And so they piled the firewood at the stake!

If a champion would save her they agreed to spare the maiden,

But that looked like a danger no man would dare to face,

For on the field Sir Brian, a murderous crusader,

Stood by to fight and kill whoever came.

None there were so courageous,

As to oppose his power,

To save a Jewish damsel from the flame!

Repeat Chorus

In the nick of time Sir Wilfred, took the challenge for Rebecca,

None better knew her innocence than he,

In the name of truth and justice he went forth to fight Sir Brian,

and God's own hand from heaven gave Wilfred victory!

Thus rescued by Sir Wilfred of Ivanhoie from burning,

Rebecca lived and God was glorified,

But Ivanhoe's example too often goes unheeded,

Come Christians let us be on Jacob's side!

Repeat Chorus and finis

There Is Just One Lord -Which One Is Yours?
Lyrics and Music by Kevin S. Johnson

You can make a god of money,

You can make a god of hate,

You can make a god of pleasure,

And he'll never make you wait.

You can make a god of power,

But you'll have to pay your dues!

'Cause there's just One Jesus...

Better let Him help you choose!

'Cause there's just One Lord,

-Which one is yours??

There's a Jesus of the Muslims,

There's a Jesus of the Jews,

There's a Jesus of the Mormons,

Who would love to share their views.

There's a Jesus of the Opera.,

And a Jesus of the Blues.

But there's just One Jesus,

Better let Him help you choose!

'Cause there's just One Lord,

-Which one is yours??

You can follow old Osama,

You can follow Ellen White,

You can follow New Age Shirley,

As she's dancin' in the night.

You can make up your own gospel,

But it's your soul you're gonna lose!

'Cause there's just One Jesus,

Better let Him help you choose!

'Cause there's just One Lord,

-Which one is yours??

In His word we call the Bible,

You can read about His truth.

You can come to know this Person,

Who gives prophecy as proof!

You can trust Him with your future,

Or stubbornly refuse!

'Cause there's just One Jesus,

Better let Him help you choose!

'Cause there's just One Lord,

-Which one is yours??

More Lyrics From Knights Album Songs . . .

The Album Also Includes Humor

A group of hardened convicts at a high security prison in Florida refused to clap at all for the first two songs that Kevin and Joseph sang from the Knights album. It wasn't until they heard the humorous song on the album entitled I Can Do No Wrong that they burst out in applause and seemed to really enjoy themselves after that. Many came up to talk with them after the performance.

Here are the lyrics:

I Can Do No Wrong
by Joseph Ravitts

I can do no wrong 'cause I'm a rich man.

I made my fortune from Free Enterprise,

I pay my taxes when I can't evade them,

And always do what's right in my own eyes!

I can do no wrong 'cause I'm a poor man,

That wealthy hypocrite sure has his nerve,

An honest man like me should have his money,

I'll get a gun and take what I deserve!

I can do no wrong 'cause I'm a woman,

Exploited by the male since I was three,

It's men who are to blame for all our trouble,

So I can do whatever pleases me!

Chorus:

I can do no wrong 'cause I'm a white man,

And I can do no wrong becaiuse I'm black,

Oh I can do no wrong I'm only human,

So get those Jesus People off my back!

What's mine is mine what's yours is mine,

Whatever I decide is fine,

You can't tell me to tow the line,

'Cause I'm as tough as Frankenstein!

I always say that "might makes right,"

As long as I don't lose the fight,

But if success is not in sight,

I'll bring a lawsuit out of spite!

I can do no wrong 'cause I'm a guru,

A perfect master of the highest rank,

I'll free you from the burden of your money,

And do my meditating at the bank!!

I can do no wrong cause I'm a (fill in the name of any church group or denomination here),

No other church but mine is given grace,

If God should let those others into Heaven,

I think I'd rather live some other place!

Repeat Chorus

Morality is just a game,

To try and make me feel some shame,

But I know I am not to blame,

'Cause everybody does the same!

Who cares what preachers have to say,

I'm not concerned with judgment day,

I'll go on living my own way,

I'm sure I'll never have to pay!

I can do no wrong cause I'm an old man,

My wisdom and my knowledge never fail,

Experience has made my thoughts impartial,

Those hairy beatniks ought to be in jail!

I can do no wrong 'cause I'm a young man,

There's no one as intelligent as I,

This Universe was made for my convenience,

I wish old folks would hurry up and die!

Repeat Chorus:

I can do no wrong 'cause I'm a white man,

And I can do no wrong because I'm black,

Oh I can do no wrong I'm only human,

So get those Jesus People off my back!!

Another issue that is dealt with musically in a mini "Rock-Opera" format is that of pacificism versus "might for right" as the Arthurian traditions would put it. Can a Christian ever engage in just combat? This question is answered in the dramatic telling of The Fable of Young Roderick. Kevin and Joseph were literally living a hundred miles apart when they composed this song. Kevin wrote the music and most (but not all) of the lyrics collaborating with Joseph mostly on story line, form and names. What was found out only after the albums release was that it was written (unintentionally) in "heroic couplet," a literary style used by the minstrels of old whenever they would tell a story of battle. A friend, Jeff Hallberg, who had a degree in literature informed them of this. This is the story:

The Fable Of Young Roderick
by Kevin S. Johnson and Joseph Ravitts

In days of old in Nestleshire there lived a pacifistic friar,

Who at all thought of war grew sick, and thus he taught young Roderick,

Young Roderick loved a gentle maid who blanched at sight of iron blade,

And so he trowed "I'll never fight however dreadful be my plight,"

Now o'er this land of gentle mist young Vikings held their iron fist.

A raging band of pagan Danes drew nigh the fief where Sir Jay reigned.

Sir Jay a noble man from birth decided to defend his earth,

So issued he a firm decree declaring soldiers all to be!

Our Roderick took a daring stand no killing would come by his hand,

Thus Roderick was deemed cowardly the townsmen showed no charity,

And so when men were called to fight young Roderick fled into the night.

The morning hour brought battle grim

While Roderick fought his war within.

How can a man who's born again,

Sit back and watch his dying friends?

The Danish fury reached its peak and children soon were heard to shriek,

As Roderick watched in agony they carried off his bride to be.

Then a knight rode in with a blood red cross on his shield,

Driving the Vikings across the field,

Roderick watched as he knelt to pray,

What could he say, on that day?

He said, "Lord I would serve only You!

And help me to know who is true,

The monk or the knight from the glen?

Oh tell me is fighting a sin?"

Then the knight cried out like and angel from the skies,

"For King Arthur and God's Christ!"

Galahad rescued Roderick's maid,

By his blade, Roderick prayed,

He said, "Father I'll fight just for Thee,

And thank You for setting me free,

The weak and the helpless I see,

Need someone to make villains flee!"

He seized a spear and joined the fight until the Vikings took to flight,

Then hymns of praise to God were sung and soon the wedding bell was rung,

Sir Jay told Roderick; "War is cruel and fighting just a sharpened tool.

Though sharpened spades are useful tools...

They're worthless in the hands of fools!"
