This Is Part One Of A Bible Study To Help Prepare You To
Reach Out To The Jehovah's Witness. All Scripture
quoted below, unless otherwise noted is taken from the NIV.
Definition Of A Cult:
Two or more people who have a real or imaginary need
that they are trying to meet or fulfill by believing that
which is false about the Person and work of the historical
and Biblical Jesus Christ.
A cult would be in error enough to be considered heretics;
belief in, and adherence to their doctrine, would lead one
to the same eternal destination as Satan himself, which is
ultimately the lake of fire spoken of in Revelation. We consider
Jehovah's Witnesses to be such a cult.
I. What You Must Keep In Mind When Witnessing To Anyone
Who Denies The Trinity And The Gospel Of Grace ie: The
Nature Of God And The Exclusivity Of The Gospel Message.
A. Jesus Christ: Any time we are witnessing
to a Jehovah's Witness (or any other non-believer) it is imperative
that we remember that Jesus Christ and His death, burial and
resurrection are central to our faith and the Christian world
view. If you do not have the right Jesus, you do not have
eternal life. Also keep in mind while you interact with them
that these are people He died for so do so with gentlenes
and love but firmness in the truth (1 Peter 3:15).
1. Jn 14:6: "I am the Way , The Truth,
and The Life. No one comes to the Father but through me."
2. Jn. 3:35-36: "The Father loves the
Son and has placed everything in His hands. Whoever believes
in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will
no see life, for God's wrath remains on him."
3. Jn 17:3: "Now this is eternal life:
That they may know You, the only true God and Jesus Christ,
whom you have sent."
4. I Co. 15:3-8: This is the Gospel in a
nutshell, Paul claims these tenets mentioned in this passage
to be of first importance. It is the only place in Scripture
where the Gospel is explicitly stated and defined.
5. I Co. 15:14-19: This is Paul's reply
to those who were teaching that there is no resurrection,
as do the Jehovah's Witnesses.
6. John 14:6 is an absolute statement. If
we do not have the right Jesus, we do not have eternal life.
No matter how sincere our faith or how kind we are to our
fellow man, Jesus is the only way to a right relationship
with our Creator.
B. The work of the Holy Spirit: We must
also be aware of the work of the Holy Spirit and rely on Him
to lead us into making true statements about Jesus and helping
us remember Scripture we have studied and memorized. He will
help us discern what the other person is saying and help us
formulate answers. He is the One who convicts man of man's
sinful ways and shows man the wickedness of man's heart.
1. Jn 15:26 and 16:12 Tells us the Holy
Spirit as a Person is the Spirit of Truth who goes out from
the Father and who will testify about Jesus; he will guide
us into all truth. A Person not a force, as taught by the
Jehovah's Witnesses, will commune and communicate with us.
2. Jn 16:7-16: He convicts the world of
guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment. We can
not convict anyone of their sin or errors. We can merely discern
a person's theology and actions and point out the Truth and
explain to them the differences between the two, all the while
praying that our efforts do not fall on deaf ears.
C. The Attributes of Deity: Knowing well
the attributes of deity will help us discern false statements
the Jehovah's Witness may make about Jesus or the Holy Spirit.
Keeping these points in mind will also help us in navigating
Scripture as we show what the Bible really has to say about
the Holy Spirit and Jesus; it will help us to use passages
that Jehovah's Witnesses may not have studied or practiced
in their preparation for coming to your door. The following
list of Scripture is not exhaustive.
1. God is Spirit: Jn 4:24. The nature of
spirit is invisibility and, without flesh and bone: Lk 24:39.
god is invisible: Colossians 1:15
2. God Is Eternal: Deut. 33:27; Ps 90:2,
93:2; Is 63:16; Hab 1:12; Rom 1:20; 1 Pet 5:10
3. God Is Omniscient: PS 139:2-4,6; Heb.
4:13
4. God Is Omnipotent: Job 26:14, 38:4-6;
Ps 18:13-15, 62:11, 89:6; Dan 4:35; Matt 8:3
5. God Is Omnipresent: Ps 138-7-8; Jer 23:24
6. God Is Unchangeable: Ex 3:14; Ps 119:89;
Mal 3:6; James 1:17
7. God is Holy and, Therefore, Without Sin Or Any
Evil: Ex 15:11; Deut 32:4; 2 Chron 20:21; IS 6:3;
Hab 1:13;; 1 John 1:15; Rev 15:4
II. Tools For Witnessing To The Jehovah's Witnesses
A. 2 Tim 1:7, and Rom 8:15: Do not be afraid to talk with
the Jehovah's Witness at your door. We have not been given
a spirit of timidity, but one of sonship with God as our Father.
B. 1 Pet 3:15: We are commanded to be prepared to give a
reason for the hope that lies within us. It is our duty to
try to persuade the person at our door of the Truth.
C. "Help me, I'm lost (and by the way, I am here to
talk about spiritual things):" The Jehovah's Witness
on your doorstep whether he knows it or not is wearing the
above sign in big letters!!! How many times have you asked
the Holy Spirit to give you opportunity to talk to someone
at work, a neighbor or a family member about the Gospel. Here
is a great opportunity.
D. Exhaustive Knowledge vs. True Knowledge: We do not have
to have answers for every question that may be raised in our
discussion with the Jehovah's Witness. It is ok to acknowledge
that a good question has been raised and that you would be
happy to find the proper response. Keep a note pad handy and
jot down anything you don't know.Faith tells you there are
answers! If we do not have an answer to something they may
bring up, it does not make us less spiritual or a "bad"
Christian. Allow the Holy Spirit to use the encounter to stretch
you and show you where you may be weak in your own faith.
Physical muscles require use and exercise, so do spiritual
"muscles". The saying "no pain no gain"
applies here. Finding answers to some of the difficult questions
will strengthen your faith.
E. Training and Rehearsal: The Jehovah's Witness appears
at your door only after much training and practice at the
particular point he brings up; the encounter at your door
has been scripted and practiced at the Kingdom Hall. As stated
above, we do not have to have exhaustive knowledge, but we
should be able to discern the content of the conversation
and make attempts to turn the conversation at some point to
the nature of Jesus.
How practiced are you? Can you navigate through Scripture
and show somebody why Jesus is God according to Holy Writ?
We can use our Bible study time to worship Jesus in this way,
making outlines of how to show the Deity of Jesus using Scripture.
We should commit these scriptures and "paths" to
memory and pray that the Holy Spirit would bring them to mind
at the appropriate times and give us discernment as to how
to use them. Remember Jn 15:26, 16:12 and Paul's prayer Phil
1:9-11
Examples:
Show Jesus performing deeds that are ascribed only to God.
The Jehovah's Witness will agree with you that only God can
perform certain things, like the forgiving of sin.
Matthew 9:1-7 is the story about Jesus healing
the paralytic who was lowered from the roof. Jesus said to
the man "your sins are forgiven." The Pharisees
thought in their minds, "Who is this man, for only God
can forgive sins?" Jesus discerned what was in their
minds and asked them, "What is easier to say to the man,
get up and walk away, you are healed, or your sins are forgiven?"
The Pharisees knew exactly what Jesus was doing and could
not deny it. By the way, how did Jesus know their thoughts
(v. 4)?
John 10:22-29: Jesus states that he and
the Father are one -- the Pharisees knew exactly what Jesus
was saying and the implications that He was God and got ready
to stone him, but Jesus slipped away. This statement that
He had the right or authority to forgive sin would be blasphemy
if it were not true. If this statement were not true, then
Jesus would be a liar. How could someone call Jesus a good
teacher? How could God raise him into heaven -- even as a
spirit being as the Jehovah's Witnesses claim, if Jesus practiced
lying and deceiving?
